LONGBINH'S DIAL CENTRAL OFFICE

One of the responsibilities of the 44th Signal Battalion, was the creation and operation
of the "Dial Central Office".

For a few months, we worked 12 hours ON and 12 hours OFF manning a very large telephone switch board.

Vietnam, as far as I know, did not have "Yellow Pages" or "White Pages". And even if they did, they would NOT have
listed certain military phone numbers.

Therefore sometimes we served as an information operator.

However, during 1968, we were replaced by Vietnamese operators.

And most of us were reassigned to other duties.
I was fortunate (luck or divine intervention?) to have been reassigned to the a very modern push button communications console,
in the "War Room" at USARV headquarters. Where I worked the grave yard shift.
Working fewer hour than before, I had time to take two University of Maryland extension courses in Mathematics.
The professor was a very smart major who was in charge of Tunnel Logistics at the 1st Logistical Command.
